Executive Function 

When Executive Function is struggling, we look beyond the diagnosis to understand the brain and body systems influencing how a child learns, regulates, and  performs.

Executive function isn't a diagnosis. It's a set of skills that allow us to plan, organize, prioritize, regulate emotions, shift attention, remember instructions, and get things done.

Many approaches focus on teaching executive function strategies. While those strategies can be valuable, they often assume the brain is fully available to use them.

I believe the better question is:

Why is executive function difficult for this brain?

Executive function doesn't develop in isolation. It depends on healthy communication between brain networks, efficient timing, adequate energy production, sensory processing, emotional regulation, sleep, movement, and the integration of higher-level thinking. 

When one or more of these systems is under stress, executive function is often one of the first places we see it. 

  • Healthy brain networks

  • Developmental history

  • Brain timing

  • Sensory processing

  • Sleep & recovery

  • Emotional regulation

  • Movement

  • Functional laboratory findings

  • Environmental influences

Research Spotlight

Research continues to demonstrate that executive function depends on healthy communication across multiple brain networks—not just the frontal lobes.

 

Because these skills emerge from coordinated brain function, understanding how these networks are working together can provide valuable insight into attention, organization, emotional regulation, and learning.
